Generally speaking, for most deciduous trees – that's the kind that loses its leaves in the fall – the dormant season is your best bet. That's late fall through early spring, after the leaves have dropped and before new buds start to swell. Why then? Well, for starters, it's easier for us to see the tree's structure without all the foliage in the way. We can spot dead or diseased branches more clearly, and it makes for a more precise cut. Plus, the tree isn't actively growing, so it's less stressed by the pruning and has plenty of time to heal before the spring growth spurt. Think of it like a winter haircut – you're ready for spring.
